For several years now, the Association for Retail Environments (A.R.E.) has driven an industry dialog on store design ROI. Why is ROI such an important topic for our members and retailers? Perhaps the best answer to that is another question: In this era of Big Data, how can you expect to get funding for anything without data to back it up?
In your gut, you know a remodeled store is more appealing to shoppers … and happy shoppers buy. But you need proof. This article might help: WARC MOBILE: Store redesign a strategic investment. It’s refreshing to see a retailer go to the effort the study required, and even more refreshing to see them share the information in a notoriously secretive industry.
Despite the lack of sharing, A.R.E. is persevering in its efforts to provide our members and their clients with the ROI data they desperately need. Our campaign is taking a big step forward this year, thanks in great part to A.R.E. member EWI Worldwide, which researched and wrote an in-depth report called The ROI on Retail Design. The report includes results of an A.R.E. retail survey and compiles currently available information from annual reports, press releases, articles, and case studies. Look for the report in the upcoming issue of A.R.E.’s Retail Environments magazine.
We’re taking our campaign on the road as well, with regional workshops and a major GlobalShop conference session. We’ve expanded and updated the format of this year’s Shoptalk series to include a 1 hour workshop on ROI conducted by EWI’s Janis Healy. And Karen Schaffner, who has been leading A.R.E.’s ROI campaign, will moderate a GlobalShop panel discussion called “The ROI Advantage–How To Get Your Store Design Project Approved.” On the panel: Janis Healy, Angela Hoekstra Gearhart of Select Comfort, and Julie Swanson of Car Toys.
If you want to know more about the power of store design, attend both the Shoptalk workshops and the GlobalShop conference session.
