In its newly released Retail Innovation Annual Report, consulting firm Kalypso points to three mega-themes for the year:
1. The reimagining of ubiquitous products that are already familiar to the consumer. Examples include pants that charge a cell phone and a new wand designed to make it easier to paint your own nails.
2. Increasing consumer engagement/transparency to the retailing process. Among the examples cited in the report is Meijer’s pilot checkout system that automatically scans merchandise on the conveyer belt, saving time and allowing customers to bag their own groceries.
3. Increased personalization and customization, such as workout clothing that analyzes sweat to create a personalized wellness profile.
