Bank flagship with coffee shop percolates excitement
One look at CallisonRTKL’s design for the Capital One Union Square flagship in New York is enough to realize this isn’t a typical bank branch. Rather, it’s an enchanting forest of amenities ensconced inside a colorful, chic interior.
The three-story, 12,000-sq.-ft. project combines branch operations, staff training facilities, and public gathering spaces. The entry level is entirely public-facing and anchored by a coffee shop. There’s abundant seating to facilitate impromptu meetings and momentary respites — or simply recharging phones and laptops. A dramatic stair invites customers to a second floor of even more gathering spaces, as well as tellers, private consulting areas, and offices.
A LED wall framing the ATMs on the ground floor extends to the second level, where it emerges from the building as an awning and polychromatic digital screen.
The flagship was recently highlighted in Retail Environments magazine. For more outstanding designs in the Big Apple — most notably the Westfield World Trade Center and Portuguese shoe brand Josefinas — see the latest issue.
