Shawmut Design and Construction was named one of the nation’s 100 Best Workplaces by FORTUNE Magazine, earning the 84th spot on the medium-sized companies list. This marks the second consecutive year Shawmut has been honored by FORTUNE, and is preceded by being named a best place to work 50 times throughout regional markets, according to Shawmut.
FORTUNE’s list is based on anonymous employee responses to an extensive survey that covers such topics as trust, camaraderie, and pride. Shawmut scored near the top in almost every category.
The replies include 96% of employees cite a strong sense of pride—not just in the projects, but also in the way the company serves its clients. Another 92% feel the company offers incredible benefits, like an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP), a company-paid health coverage option, college tuition reimbursement, a comprehensive four-week Paid Family Leave benefit, and Shawmut Flex, a program that provides employees with flexible work arrangements.
“We put our values to work every day in both the field and in the office,” says Les Hiscoe, CEO of Shawmut. “For employees, this translates to strong work-life integration, comprehensive benefits, and consistent opportunities for career development. Such arrangements are a proven way to enhance employee engagement, productivity, and job satisfaction, all of which ultimately serve to enhance our customer experience.”
More survey results reveal that 93% of employees feel good about the way Shawmut gives back to the community, such as raising over $1,000,000 for Dana–Farber Cancer Institute through its annual participation in the Pan-Mass Challenge and donating $26,000 of toys through Project Happier Holidays. A whopping 95% also believe Shawmut creates a great atmosphere, both onsite and in its offices.
“As a 100% employee-owned company, each employee is charged with thinking and acting like an owner—which translates into a collaborative, efficient, and diverse workplace,” according to Shawmut.
