Authentic, historically accurate popup space fit for a king
“King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh,” a traveling exhibition of more than 150 authentic artifacts, celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the legendary tomb’s discovery. The adjoining popup retail space honors the rich legacy and cultural significance of an historical icon with authentic design elements that contribute to a seamless flow from the exhibit to the retail space. Every detail can be packed up, shipped across the world, and reopened at least nine times for the exhibit’s six-year, multicity tour. Merchandise in the retail area includes toys, games, clothing, artwork, statuary, jewelry, books, and myriad other Tut-branded and Egyptian-themed items.
A mix of high-end elegance and Old World Egyptian accents form the foundation for the environment’s overall aesthetic. Visitors experience a natural transition from the exhibit though the use of custom, hand-painted faux stone columns and intricate hieroglyphic wall treatments that look and feel historic, but are made of materials that are modern, durable, versatile, and high-tech for easy shipping.
The feeling of authenticity extends into the checkout area, where hieroglyphics and digital displays featuring photos of Egypt add to the theme of the environment without looking overtly contemporary. Custom-finished display systems and authentic lighting fixtures procured from Egypt and retrofitted for commercial use round out the rest of the environment so that the eclectic merchandise mix can be flexibly displayed.
The temporary space feels like a natural extension of a visitor’s journey through the antiquities on display. The respectful approach to the historical significance of the exhibit gives the retail area a true sense of place.
