Vibrant hues turn up the volume at ultra-luxury boutique
Shawmut Design and Construction, a leading $1.5 billion national construction management firm, has completed the new Rodeo Drive location for House of Bijan, the ultra-luxury, appointment-only menswear boutique. Located just north of its original home, the relocated boutique honors the longstanding Bijan vision and tradition while modernizing its overall look and feel.
Shawmut Design and Construction, in partnership with an architecture firm, remodeled an existing three-story building to deliver the new Bijan retail space and company headquarters. To replicate the iconic boutique’s original storefront and retail space, the Shawmut team applied Bijan’s trademark yellow plaster on both the interior and exterior walls. The building’s façade was updated with precast molding frames, wood frame windows above street level, and retail display windows at street level. The team also meticulously removed, transported, and installed heritage elements from the original store, including the original entry door and wardrobes.
“We were honored to bring House of Bijan, the oldest and most iconic shop on Rodeo Drive, to its impressive new home,” says Greg Skalaski, VP of Shawmut West. “Due to our expertise in working on Rodeo Drive, our team was able to leverage our trusted contacts and extensive knowledge of the area to ensure the project and permit process ran smoothly. By working off-hours, we also provided minimal disruption to the neighboring businesses in this dense urban area.”
During the construction process, which included highly complex upgrades, the Shawmut team had to work within the existing concrete and structural conditions of the Rodeo Collection. Among the structural upgrades was the addition of a mezzanine. Additionally, the team created back-of-house space for tailoring rooms, offices, and conference rooms. A crucial element of the store design was the integration of the lighting with the mirrors to provide the optimum experience for guests.
House of Bijan’s interior finishes include stone flooring, glass guardrails, and three custom skylights. To the right of the entryway, Mouths of Truth sculptures act as both an art installation and product display. Clay pots with purple flower bougainvillea are on three balconies so they grow around the window frames, as well as on the roof edge. The focal point of the new boutique is the custom ornamental chandelier made of House of Bijan cologne bottles instead of standard crystals, setting the tone for a truly unique and luxurious guest experience.
House of Bijan is the latest in Shawmut’s longstanding portfolio of projects on Rodeo Drive, including flagship stores for Harry Winston, Louis Vuitton, Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, Pomellato, and more.
