Industry leader Richard J. Fellinger, former president and CEO of Mechtronics Corp., died on Sept. 27 after a 10-month battle with cancer.
Fellinger was an active member of POPAI for over 30 years and served 13 years on POPAI’s Board of Directors. He chaired POPAI’s Marketplace tradeshow, the Finance and Research committees, and served multiple terms as treasurer prior to his appointment as POPAI’s chairman of the board from 1989 to 1990. While POPAI chairman, Fellinger was instrumental in the establishment of the charter creating POPAI Europe.
He also used the platform to become a staunch advocate for industry ethics, protection of intellectual property, the use of research to promote in-store effectiveness, and collaboration between retailers, brands, and marketing at retail agencies.
Fellinger joined the marketing at retail industry in 1977 as EVP of TransWorld Marketing following more than a decade in sales and finance at CBS Radio. In 1988, he acquired and became president and CEO of Mechtronics Corp., a display company founded in 1944.
Fellinger and Mechtronics have been active sponsors of The Arc of Bergen and Passaic Counties, Inc., a private nonprofit organization of families, self-advocates, professionals, and community members dedicated to assisting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. In 2003, Fellinger and his wife, Stella, received the Arc’s Humanitarian Award and a commendation from the New Jersey State Assembly for their work with the organization.
The Fellingers have been advocates for children’s rights in special education for 20 years. In 2007, Mechtronics was recognized for Outstanding Service to the Developmentally Disabled for its ongoing corporate support of the Arc chapter.
