Hospitality-inspired dispensary design rolls out welcome mat
Taking cues from the boutique hotel world, this elegant dispensary imparts elevated wellness in a modern welcoming environment. Strategic design decisions integrate the dispensary into the heart of the community, create intimate areas within a large space, comply with regulations without compromising style, and account for future layout changes when the store makes a planned shift from medicinal to recreational sales.
Impactful color blocking throughout the space modernizes the historic structure. At the entry, a sculpted mustard-yellow feature wall transforms a two-way security mirror and ties into the large, three-sided reception desk beneath a unique glass pendant.
In front of the desk, a black-and-white-tile “welcome mat,” accented with the brand name in gold lettering, invites guests into the spacious lobby in boutique-hotel fashion. The dramatic reception area serves as a beacon to passersby. Hotel lounge appeal carries into the modern furnishings and fabrics in the store’s Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired palette. A 14-ft. focal wall —comprising reproduced, tea-stained historical building, city, and cannabis images and documents — brings the brand, mission, and history of the area to life.
Beyond the lobby are consultation corridor with private meeting rooms, the main showroom, and a boldly branded exit lounge. Frosted glass heightens anticipation while complying with regulations prohibiting visibility from the lobby to the showroom.
Blue, textural walls and elegant sculpted glass pendants give the private consultation lounges a soothing, professional feel. In space slotted for a future edibles bar area is an Instagrammable ATM machine surrounded by a ribbon art installation, hung on a 7-ft.-circle suspended 10 ft. above the floor.
A custom apothecary-style POS feature wall in a raspberry hue. Cabinet doors with touch-latch hardware for pass-through access support back-of-house order fulfillment.
A dramatic black-and-white custom wall display fixture highlights an assortment of product. Cantilevered wooden shelves, painted to reveal the woodgrain, hook into a pegboard wall. Glass-cased product displays, modeled after consumer-friendly delis and gelato shops, continue the black-and-white neutral palette that allows product to stand out.
Flexible modular components are highlighted with cheerful brand moments through graphics, custom iconography, and product signage. Black metal components and details offer a well-crafted look, an accent that makes colors and graphics pop and complements the design aesthetic of the space.
Also complementing the design is comprehensive visual merchandising that reinforces the retailer’s mission. A flexible visual merchandising kit plays with the overall store palette while providing adaptability for a changing product assortment.
The graphics and signage incorporates pops of color and graphic enhancements into the merchandising. In black trays, graphic inserts matching the brand colors add impact and maintain consistency throughout the dispensary.
Descriptive cards evoke a recipe or scientific index card with lines and typewriter font to complement the apothecary style of the millwork. Each card includes space for an “analog emoji” ink stamp created by the team to communicate the effects of the product.
